Menorrhagia

MENORRHAGIA

Menorrhagia is the condition when the woman suffers from extreme discharge of blood, but when the bleeding occurs at irregular intervals then it is known as Metrorrhagia.

Menorrhagia is further explained as excessive flow and longer duration of menstruation where the cycle starts at regular intervals. Excessive bleeding and prolonged duration of menses, is one of the most common complaint as per the contemporary gynecology. In gynecology a patient is said to be suffering from menorrhagia when the blood loss exceeds 80 ml per cycle and/or the menses last for more than seven days.

On the other hand when there is irregular bleeding or spotting in between the regular cycles of menstruation then it is defined as Metrorrhagia. Common term for Metrorrhagia is spotting, as used by many ladies.

Ayurvedic View:

Ayurveda refers to menorrhagia and metrorrhagia as rakta pradara. And these situations arise when there is imbalance of hormone, which aggravates pitta in the body.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of menorrhagia:

  • Heavy bleeding with regular menses

  • Menstruation starting with pain in the back, abdomen and hips

Symptoms of metrorrhagia include irregular bleeding and spotting in between the menses.

Causes:

Menorrhagia and metrorrhagia can be the symptoms of an underlying disease rather than being disease themselves. The causes can be listed as follows.

Menorrhagia

  • Abnormal growths in uterus or other organs
  • Early stage of menstruation and hormonal imbalance
  • Fibroids or polyps in uterus

Metrorrhagia:

  • Recent abortion
  • Contraceptive pills
  • Endometrial hyperplasia
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Infection
  • Tumor in uterus or ovary

Herbal Remedy:

Cilantro and banana flowers are considered excellent to treat excessive bleeding. If you eat cooked banana flower with one cup of curd it can help you in reinforcing progesterone which can help in controlling excessive bleeding. Raspberry is also very effective in controlling the heavy bleeding and cramps. Yarrow and nettle are the herbs that can help in treating spotting or metrorrhagia.
